The Hit Station – A new pitch recognition & baseball vision training by gameSense

Hitting is a split second decision period.

You have to recognize pitch type, ball or a strike, react accordingly and THEN hope that your mechanics are on point and your approach is correct.

No wonder hitting is the hardest thing to do in all of sports.

And like our boy Steve Springer says:

“Baseball is the biggest self-esteem destroying sport in the world” – Steve Springer

We agree.

This is why hitters are using every tool and advantage to gain that edge.

This is also why we’re excited to launch the HIT STATION.

Our newest gameSense pitch recognition training feature.

When you log in and click on Hit Station, you’ll be presented with a simulation pitch sequence.

You anticipate the type of pitch, ball or strike and then receive direct feedback.

It’s a perfect way to incorporate it into your actual batting practice session with a bat in your hand.

gameSense in action – Hit Stations, Game Simulation & Pitch Recognition Reps

We put hours in the cage to refine the swing.

We put hours in the gym to develop explosive power and bat-speed.

We get the pitch recognition part right, the refined swing and the explosive power translate better.

Period.

This is why hitting instructors, top baseball programs and the individual player who’s willing to take their development as a hitter in their own hands are taking their vision skills and pitch recognition training to a whole new level.

Come take a look and see how some of these players are utilizing the training as part of their hitting stations during B.P.

Training perceptual-cognitive skills in sports using technology by gameSense’s own Dr. Peter Fadde and Dr. Len Zaichkowsky

Ballistically reactive sports performances such as blocking a soccer or hockey shot-on-goal, returning a tennis serve, and hitting a pitched baseball or bowled cricket ball depend upon anticipating an opponent’s action. Sport science researchers have found that expert performers in many sports use superior perceptual-cognitive skills to recognize patterns in opponents’ actions, thereby priming rapid response selection and motor execution. Researchers have developed technologies and methods for measuring perceptual-cognitive skills that can also be used to improve these skills. After decades of research, technologies are now appearing as viable training products that coaches and sport psychologists can use with athletes. This article describes technologies such as visual occlusion, virtual reality, and 3D multiple object tracking for training perceptual-cognitive sport skills.

Team Pitch Recognition & Training

5 pitch recogntiion drills a day. 5 days a week. This is the pitch recognition training regiment that Bryan Austin implemented witht the Jackson Indians.

Slow start sure. But they got the work in.

Held each hitter accountable for getting their pitch recognition reps in.

Why is pitch recogniton training important?

It allows the work, training and refinments you make with a hitter’s swing & approach to surface because you’re seeing the ball as best as possible.

A sweet swing and sound approach plays, but only when the visual components are set in place, correctly and effecienty”.

If you love your swing and approach but your hard contact % is down, you’re chasing pitches you have no business chasing, or worse you’re NOT swining at pitches you should be driving with authority…

…there’s a DANG good chance you’re not seeing the ball as well as you could….or should.

How do you begin seeing the ball better?

Well – I we can tell you it’s not closing your eyes and “hoping” you learn the skill. In fact that’s the opposite.

Do what top college programs, pro ball clubs and elite hitetrs do…

…train with tools that help you move the needle. Period.

Missouri Head Coach Steve Bieser on team’s success using the gameSense Pitch Recognition Program.

How often do we train the visual aspect of hitting a baseball?

Our gut says not that often.

Baseball training is constantly evolving.

We are now in the age of measuring metrics that have a direct link to peak performance.

We believe training pitch recognition and vision will be the next frontier in hitters leveraging opportunities to achieve peak performance at the plate.

And this is why top college programs and professional clubs are getting after it in the gS Pitch Recognition & Vision training app.

So that when the season comes, their refined swings and solid approach plays because they’re seeing the ball as well as they should be.

There are dozens of ways a hitter can throw away an at-bat.

  • Trying to do too much.

  • Not having a game plan.

  • Pulling pitches they shouldn’t be pulling.

  • Not competing with 100% confidence.

“Not seeing the ball well” does NOT have to EVER be a reason why a hitter underperforms at the plate.”

We get great at seeing the ball, then it’s about competing with some calmness and focus.
