Tech Makes Baseball a Simple Game: You See the Ball, You Hit the Ball, You Got It?

Modern technology is able to illuminate the kinematic sequence of a hitter’s swing, but those assessments top out at the athlete’s torso. What happens above the neck just as critical, and it’s hard not to lean into baseball’s most famous truism of all: Yogi Berra famously said the game is “90% mental,” which makes perfect sense if you ignore that fact that he said the other 50% is physical.

Be a Gamer.

Popping out in foul territory. Striking out looking. Swinging and missing on a hanging breaking ball. Being late on an 0-2 fastball…

…these are hands down some of the worst feelings in baseball, for hitters.

Here’s a possible antidote. It starts with a quote…

“Instead of trying to be great, be good consistently. Greatness is being consistently good”.

In other words…instead of being the next “Mike Trout” or “Cody Bellinger”, be the guy who makes the pitcher pay when he leaves a breaking ball up in the zone, who does damage in hitter’s counts or who battles with behind in the count, consistently…

See – this doesn’t mean you have to hit 450-foot homers, run a 6.3 60 yard-dash or have a cannon for an arm…

…it just means, you know how to play the game.

You’re a gamer.

What’s a gamer? Great question.

A gamer:

  • competes w/ the intention to win ball games.

  • plays both sides of the field well.

  • makes their teammates better.

  • works on the little things.

  • builds on strengths and weaknesses.

Requires zero talent, and the process is 100% within your control.

So the only relevant question is this…

how bad do you want it?

Best,

P.S. We see the ball well when we’re confident. We’re confident when we see the ball well.

Train to see the ball well, effectively, then confidence comes rolling at your feet.

Take the “IF” out of your swing.

Want to know the main difference between high school level pitching and college level pitching? A good Friday/Saturday starting pitcher is able to locate secondary pitches, consistently.

The difference between a college guy and a pro guy? A pro guy can locate secondary pitches and is able to pitch backwards. Meaning – the 2-0 fastball isn’t always a given. Neither is the 2-2 breaking ball pitch to contact. Heck – he may even start the 1st inning establishing the breaking ball 0-0 for the first three hitters of the game.

Now – what’s the difference between a pro guy and a big league guy? A big league guy can do all of the above, and for the MOST part, you’re only going to see one pitch per at-bat, that you can really handle. This is why being ready to hit is such an important factor and why most of the time when you miss your pitch or fail to make 100% solid contact, it has something to do with how locked in you are on that pitch.

Our man, Springer from Quality At-Bats breaks it down for us in this 30 seconds Instagram Post. If you’re missing pitches you should be driving or freezing on the fastball down the middle, we highly recommend you check this out. How to take the “IF” out of your swing.

Why you struggle with two strikes at the plate.

Admit it.

Most of your strikes-outs happen because of either one of two things.

1. You tried pulling a ball you had no business pulling.
2. You were trying to “NOT”strike out instead of competing to make hard contact while putting the ball in play.

Here’s a tip.

STOP trying to pull the ball when you’re behind in the count and be ready to put the ball in play and put pressure on the defense!

Understanding these two concepts will make you a better hitter at the plate.

Mastering these two concepts will keep your but in the line-up even when your swing feels off or you’re facing a pitcher who has your number.

END. OF. STORY.

What does it come down to?

Having the right approach.

Playing to win instead of to “NOT” lose.

How do we practice this?

We put ourselves in “game-like” situations.

Imagine this…

You step in the batter’s box KNOWING you’re going to hit the ball hard instead of hoping.

Instead of “a deer in the headlights” you execute because you’ve refined your instincts.

Instincts you’ve refined with training.

Here’s what to do.

1. Train to recognize the breaking ball and off-speed in a minimum of five simulated at-bats in gameSense over the weekend against Adam.

2. Early in the count, sit fastball, and look for the wrist action and early PT(Pitch Trajectory) out of the Adam/s hand.

3. Measure how consistent you are at recognizing the off-speed. Adam’s slide piece is LEGIT.

Be ready.

If you’re getting the off-speed WRONG inside the gameSense training, especially behind in the count, YOU’VE FOUND a weakness in your approach at the plate.

Work in it.

This summer is a perfect chance to put all of this in action.

Let’s get after it.

Occlusion vs Full View Pitch Recognition Training For Ballplayers

Everyday we get the emails…

“How can we pick up the change-up better”

Our answer:

1. Train to see it out of the hand w/ occlusion training.
2. Combine this with a post-up approach. (See the ball up.)
If it starts low, it’ll end low.

Think about it. Most of your swinging strikeouts are chasing balls in the dirt.

Why do you think that is?

There’s a hole in your approach and you’re not seeing the ball well.

Imagine if you were able to go back in time and replace all those at-bats with the right approach?

You saw the ball out of the pitcher’s hand and you were sitting on a mistake pitch left up in the zone.

I bet your hard hit contact percentage would fly through the roof.

That’s why you need to practice Pitch Recognition.

When you see the ball better. You achieve more hard-hit contact. PERIOD.

Check out this occlusion VS full version replay.

Why is it that when a hitter struggles, the first thing we do is try to change the swing, approach or bat? How often do we ask, “are you SEEING the ball effectively?”

If you’re not seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand, you’re shootin yourself in the foot. When you’re confident, you’re seeing the ball well.

Hitting is about confidence, so let’s make sure we have a plan to pick up the pitch effectively.

Take a peek at the occlusion training. Anticipate the pitch. Pick ball or strike, type of pitch THEN check to see if you’re right with the full version REPLAY.

Vision Skills: Two strike hitting practice. Harder than it looks. Easier when you train it.

If you’re lucky, you have access to the pitches you struggle with the most with two strikes on paper…

…and my gut says it’s the change-piece.

Don’t believe me? The next time you swing at a ball in the dirt, I want you to think about what I just said.

You struggle with the off-speed when behind in the count.

All hitters do.

This is why good pitching beats good hitting. Every time.

Does this doesn’t mean there’s no hope w/ two strikes?

Nope.

There’s plenty of hope. You just need a plan.

Part of that plan is your pitch recognition skills, habits, and routines.

If you don’t have a plan, and your pitch recognition skills are underachieving, then, yeah, it’s hopeless. Good luck…you’re just another dressed-up out.

But you’re reading this for a reason, right?

You wanna be a better hitter.

Good.

That’s what we want too.

How to recognize pitches quicker. Pitchers are CREATURES of habit.

Train Your Pitch Recognition & Vision Here << Train Your Pitch Recognition & Vision Here <<

Occasionally at the big league level, you’ll see a pitcher getting dominated even with dominant pitches.

The pitchers on the mound pumping 98 mph with a 92 mph slider, and hitters are just TEEING off.

What gives?!!

You might be thinking, “how in the heck are they doing that”.

Well, chances are, it’s because they’re tipping pitches.

Say whuuuut?

Yup.

Lemme explain.

“Pitchers are creatures of habit.”

If you look close enough, you’ll notice a pitchers pattern, tick, or tip, that indicates what they’re thinking, feeling or executing.

Almost ALL pitchers do this.

Yeah. I said it. ALL.

Hey two-way guy reading this, I’m talking to you too.

You know who you are.

An elbow sticking out on a curveball grip, flaring of a glove on a changeup, faster wind up with the fastball.

There’s always something!

Learn to pick up these tendencies and it’ll be just another advantage.

Picking up a pitchers tendencies comes a lot easier when you discipline yourself to watch the pitcher, every pitch he makes.

Instead of looking in the stands for your girlfriend, watch the pitcher.

He’s the test, and he’ll give you the cliff notes.
